What is Maitake?

For thousands of years the Maitake mushroom has been collected and eaten in Japan and China as a medicinal botanical because of its profound health benefits. Cultivation of Maitake began in Japan during the 1980’s and has since spread throughout the world. In Japanese, the word “Maitake” means “dancing mushrooms”. It is said that the mushroom received its name after the people who found and ingested it danced with happiness due to the amazing impact the mushroom had on their health and well-being.

The Maitake mushroom is a type of adaptogen. Adaptogens assist the body in fighting against different types of mental and physical ailments, helping to bring balance and harmony to the energy system of the body.

Maitake 'The Dancing Mushroom'

Maitake is rich in polysaccharides, providing much of the mushroom’s medicinal qualities. One such polysaccharide is Grifolan, which has been identified as a powerful immune stimulant with anti-tumour effects. The protein content of the fungus is also impressive as it contains lectins, metal-bound proteins, and proteoglycans, which inhibit cancerous cell growth. In addition, Maitake is also rich in nucleotides, the basic building blocks of DNA. Nucleotides are presumed to have an important role in the antiviral effects of the mushroom as well as having the ability to strengthen the genetic coding of those who consume this fungus. High in fatty acid, Maitake boasts quantities of ergosterol and cyclooxygenase, associated with enhancing the structure and function of cell membranes as well as the regulation of inflammation.

Maitake is found at the base of old oak trees but has been located on linden, sweet chestnut, and beech trees also. This genus occurs in the temperate climate zones but is often overlooked due to its camouflage colouring. It’s fruiting body can grow from 20 to 60cm in size and can weigh 10kg or more.

Maitake mushrooms reportedly contain various qualities that help to prevent and treat several health conditions. Studies have discovered Maitake has powerful antibacterial properties and is also a potent agent when treating or preventing flu. In addition, Maitake is a powerful metabolism booster, supporting general vitality and energy levels. Numerous studies indicate significant positive effects in the treatment of diabetes as Maitake regulates blood sugar levels, as well as blood pressure levels, either for high or low blood pressure.

Maitake mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, beta glucans, fibres, minerals, amino acids, and potassium. This makes Maitake a must when seeking to boost vitality, longevity, and immune support. Traditionally, this mushroom has often been used in combination with other medicinal ingredients, boosting their effects, as Maitake is thought to improve the absorption of micro- and phytonutrients.

Maitake extracts have been administered in combination with conventional cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, seeming to increase the effectiveness of the treatments themselves as well as reducing their associated side-effects; thus, increasing patient well-being. Maitake is particularly beneficial for prostate health.

In addition, Maitake has also shown to have a cancer-inhibiting effect, as the presence of bioactive compounds, known as polysaccharides, not only play a major role in the treatment and prevention of cancer but also in the treatment of viral and bacterial diseases.

As this mushroom is a powerful immune booster, application in the treatment of viral conditions, such as HIV, hepatitis B and influenza, has provided promising results. The use of Maitake extract has shown to have a significant effect regarding immune stimulation and the strengthening of certain cells within the body that are crucial to viral inhibition.

Further investigation into the application of Maitake for its medicinal qualities has shown that the mushroom helps to lower cholesterol, blood lipid, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. Studies have reported the administration of Maitake extracts can increase the body’s ability to process insulin, lessening the damage caused by too much insulin in the system. This is particularly relevant for those who suffer from type II diabetes.

In addition, Maitake seems to have an inhibitory effect on the enzymes that play an important role in the inflammatory process, as well as having a positive effect on the cells responsible for cartilage formation and the ability to increase the body’s fatty acids. Studies conducted in recent years have highlighted the significant number of antioxidants and properties that promote collagen formation contained within the Maitake mushroom. Thus, Maitake can help to fend off radicals that speed up cell degeneration and promote the formation of collagen, the most important connective tissue protein in the human body, especially the skin.
